Obama promised ‘immediate’ labeling of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) amid serious demand for labeling from upwards of 93-95% of citizens conservatively based on numbers from numerous polling organizations.
5 years later, the promise for GMO labeling has not been fulfilled. Instead, Obama appointed Monsanto VP Michael Taylor as an adviser to the FDA. He currently occupies another key position in the FDA.
While Monsanto executives may be rejoicing behind the closed doors of their corporate offices, they have also just stabbed themselves in the heart with the blatant and cocky decision to go through with the Monsanto Protection Act. Obama’s social media profiles are being blown up with thousands of enraged activists and concerned citizens who are demanding answers.

Corn has been Mexico’s staple for thousands of years. Yet farmers fear that the country’s hundreds of local varieties can be lost to an invasive outsider: genetically modified corn.
Monsanto has long been trying to establish control over the seeds of the plants that produce food for the world. They have patented a number of genetically altered food crops, which can only be grown with proper license, and the seeds for which must be purchased anew each year.
Alas, genetically engineered (GE) crops cannot be contained. And rather than being found guilty of contaminating farmers’ property, Monsanto has successfully sued hundreds of unsuspecting farmers for patent infringement when unlicensed GE crops were found growing in their fields. Many farmers have subsequently, quite literally, lost their farms.
Percy Schmeiser of Saskatchewan, Canada, is but one of Monsanto’s victims, but contrary to so many others, he refused to quietly tolerate the injustice. In a classic case of David versus Goliath, Schmeiser fought back against one of the most powerful businesses in the world.
On January 31, 2012, 55 farmers and plaintiffs traveled to Manhattan to hear oral arguments regarding Monsanto’s motion to dismiss their lawsuit, Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) vs. Monsanto filed earlier in the summer.
At the heart of the lawsuit is the threat that family farmers face due to genetic trespass as a result of Monsanto’s genetically modified (GMO) seed and the aggressive enforcement of the biotech seed and chemical giant’s alleged patent rights.
