5 Million Farmers Sue Monsanto for $7.7 Billion 44

Launching a lawsuit against the very company that is responsible for a farmer suicide every 30 minutes, 5 million farmers are now suing Monsanto for as much as 6.2 billion euros (around 7.7 billion US dollars). The reason? As with many other cases, such as the ones that led certain farming regions to be known as the ‘suicide belt’, Monsanto has been reportedly taxing the farmers to financial shambles with ridiculous royalty charges. The farmers state that Monsanto has been unfairly gathering exorbitant profits each year on a global scale from “renewal” seed harvests, which are crops planted using seed from the previous year’s harvest.

The practice of using renewal seeds dates back to ancient times, but Monsanto seeks to collect massive royalties and put an end to the practice. Why? Because Monsanto owns the very patent to the genetically modified seed, and is charging the farmers not only for the original crops, but the later harvests as well. Eventually, the royalties compound and many farmers begin to struggle with even keeping their farm afloat. It is for this reason that India slammed Monsanto with groundbreaking ‘biopiracy’ charges in an effort to stop Monsanto from ‘patenting life’.

Jane Berwanger, a lawyer for the farmers who went on record regarding the case, told the Associted Press:

“Monsanto gets paid when it sell the seeds. The law gives producers the right to multiply the seeds they buy and nowhere in the world is there a requirement to pay (again). Producers are in effect paying a private tax on production.”

The findings echo what thousands of farmers have experienced in particularly poor nations, where many of the farmers are unable to stand up to Monsanto. Back in 2008, the Daily Mail covered what is known as the ‘GM Genocide’, which is responsible for taking the lives of over 17,683 Indian farmers in 2009 alone. After finding that their harvests were failing and they started to enter economic turmoil, the farmers began ending their own lives — oftentimes drinking the very same insecticide that Monsanto provided them with.

As the information continues to surface on Monsanto’s crimes, further lawsuits will begin to take effect. After it was ousted in January that Monsanto was running illegal ‘slave-like’ working rings, more individuals became aware of just how seriously Monsanto seems to disregard their workers — so why would they care for the health of their consumers? In April, another group of farmers sued Monsanto for ‘knowingly poisoning’ workers and causing ‘devastating birth defects’.

Will endless lawsuits from millions of seriously affected individuals be the end of Monsanto?

  1. No, because Monsanto will win these lawsuits. When farmers buy seed from Monsanto, they agree not to plant the “renewal seed” that is produced. The law of contract is pretty clear, and if the law did not support Monsanto’s way of doing business, they would operate in a different way. (In much of Africa they give away their product and do not attempt to enforce rights to intellectual property.)

    • I would be interested to see the documentation supporting your argument about them giving free seed and not enforcing their property rights. I’m trying to collect as much information as possible before I form an opinion and I haven’t come across this information before! Please post here, Thanks

      • What i do not realize is if truth be told how you’re not ralley much more well-appreciated than you might be right now. You’re very intelligent. You know thus considerably relating to this topic, made me personally consider it from numerous various angles. Its like women and men aren’t fascinated except it is something to do with Woman gaga! Your own stuffs outstanding. All the time take care of it up!

    • Ok, but what about the pollen-contaminated crops that are prosecuted for containing the companys patented genes? That’s criminal.

    • Winning lawsuits doesn’t mean people will continue to buy your products given the publicity you’ve caused 🙂

  2. Well, there are also a matter of reasonability in the law. Not to speak about human rights. Corporations can not just crush smaller and weaker parties anyway they want. And if the law doesn’t protect the weaker, well, then we have to change the fucking laws. The laws were made by the rich for the rich. And if 5.5 million farmers are negatively influenced by this law by only trying to survive, the law has to be changed. That’s what the rich do all the time anyway. If a law doesn’t suit them, they get a new legislation and makes a new law in their favor. This has to stop.

  3. Doesn’t matter…if this many farmers are purchasing the poisonous seeds from Monsanto, I don’t give a flip about their produce or their profit. Farmers should not purchase these poisons from Monsanto but should use seed which has not been contaminated.

    • Kathy, if you were watching your family die of starvation and someone offered you a seed that would feed them…would you plant it?
Please understand that most of these farmers have no choice, quite the opposite actually. They’re farmers for goodness sake! They have caring and feeding in their DNA! Do you really think they would CHOOSE to help destroy the world if they had a choice?

They have been lied to and manipulated to the point of slavery by Monsanto and now – because they DO care so much – they are committing suicide in never before seen numbers because of the hell they find themselves trapped in!

Walk a mile Ma’am, then Do Unto

  4. -Mitt Romney, while the Head of Bain Capital, brought Monsanto back from the dead.
-Bill Gates owns 500,000 shares of Monsanto and preaches vaccinations. Children that are vaccinated are 500% more likely to get sick than non vaccinated kids.
-Bill Gates says that vaccinating people will lower the population (he says he wants it brought down from the present 8 Billion to 500 million.
-Monsanto, Bill Gates, and Rockerfeller do not allow GM foods in their cafeterias.
-The above mentioned have invested in the storage of heirloom seeds in Alaska.
-The FDA has many, many people working there that are ex Monsanto employees. One even wrote a paper on why a Monsanto product should be approved, then was given a job at the FDA and approved her own memo.
-Tens of thousand in India have committed suicide because of Monsanto’s GMO seeds.
-How many “Yes to labeling” votes were cancelled/lost in California recently?
-These days it is hard to know what is truth and what is fiction, but there is enough to know that Monsanto is evil and hated around the World., yet no one does anything.
-Capitalism at it’s finest. No wonder the World is in trouble.

  5. I stongly aree with this fight against Monsanto. I have a tee shirt company and would like to make tees and sell them to help raise funds to fight monsanto. Does any one know who to contact.

    • In Finland, we have major left wing political party, SDP Social Democratic Party, which had even duinrg 90 s slogan Kill one farmer per day because they so much wanted to stop local Finnish farming. Reason for their behaviour was agricultural subsidies. They still believe that when no farmers in Finland, no subsidies, and so proletariate can buy very cheap food from Greece, Russia or China. Ridiculous? Yes, because now young people don’t want to become farmers, because it’s not good job . If you can not believe my story, just use google tapa talonpoika pe4ive4sse4 which means word by word kill farmer per day . You can find thousands of results, and most of them people ask why?

    • Here is a link to an article of research done by a french university

      bhttp://www.globalresearch.ca/seeds-of-destruction-the-diabolical-world-of-genetic-manipulation/25303y

You need only do a small search on google regarding monsanto to find all the information you need

    • If you let me know how to contact you, I’ll forward the info to all the webpages I visit that are like-minded and help you grow your brand. I know of several people who would LOVE to buy a “grow food not Monsanto” tee shirt…get back to me 🙂

    • John I hope you can see this reply. We need to teach the world the true cost of eating suicidal Monsanto foods. Monsanto foods are nutritionally bankrupt and the cost of healthcare (because of our deficient diet) is enormous. WE have to show people that eating Non-GMO foods is cheaper in the long run and can be done on a budget. I know of many web sites that promote a healthful lifestyle and would love to support your efforts to sell tee shirts that will help teach. I’ll buy one! Kill Monsanto not farmers or Grow food not monsanto…

  6. I am so sick of Monsanto’s bullshit. I hope they win. We have to get Monsanto of the system. They can’t stop someone from using seeds of their own. That is a bunch of crap. What’s it gonna take???? I would anything it took to fight them. Did the law pass in their favor? Need feedback please.

    • It’s not too early, it’s just right. Gather dirt into large mounds plant 3 seeds in the mddlie of it. Water every day and if more than 1 seed sprouts, wait a week or 2 then snuff out all but the healthies looking one. Keep weeds away, water reguarly (the key word is regularly) and apply plant food (Miracle Grow or Peter’s Plant Food) about every week or as directed on package. Good Luck!

    • Lance, you can help by spreading the word about Monsanto and by teaching people the true cost of eating suicidal Monsanto foods. These foods are nutritionally bankrupt and are one of the major reasons we are becoming a sick world. The cost of healthcare insurance and missed work are FAR more than the cost of buying NON-GMO, organic foods. Almost everything Monsanto sells is hybridized so they can have the patents that keep them lording over everyone.
Look at the real costs, then make your choices. Teach everyone who will listen. The only way we’re going to stop Monsanto is to STOP PAYING THEM TO KILL US. THERE ARE MORE OF US THAN THEM!

  7. I was just out in my garden trying to control the spread of mint. Mint is lovely but it spreads and gets into everything and inhibits other lovely things from growing. As a plant it seems to want to dominate the garden… Just take your time and follow the roots and keep digging them out, it isn’t so hard it just takes careful and considered determination… The same can probably be said for any corporation which regardless of whether it’s lovely or not seems to set it’s sights on world domination to the detriment of other lovely things in the world. A garden like the world is a place where variety spells health…

  8. I don’t like being tricked into eating there product without a choice. I didn’t even know about Monsanto and GMO food till last year. I don’t even trust the food I eat any more. I found out I been eating GMO food for years and didn’t know.

  9. There are plenty of farmers who didn’t buy Monsanto’s seeds whose own crops were then “contaminated” by Monsanto. Monsanto then sues the farmer. How do we know Monsanto isn’t flying planes all over the globe, contaminating farms so they can charge or sue the farmers later? Why can’t those farmers sue Monsanto for their seeds contaminating the farmer’s crop even if it was caused by natural pollination?

    • This is true. Farmers who actually try to fight the lawsuit by Monsanto end up bankrupt doing so. There is really only one solution against such a giant. Instead of farmers throwing money at lawyers to fight Monsanto, they should instead hire real-life mercenaries and target everyone responsible – from the thugs who berate the farmers at their homes to the top of the chain.
I was so pleased to hear about the Monsanto representative who was mobbed and beaten in India. That is the right way to deal with a monster. http://realfoodforager.com/india-farmers-beat-monsanto-rep/
      Amen to that.

    • although i have no proof i believe they did spray or are spraying. Just the other week i saw a documentary about awoman who lived on Crete for some time and said she saw airplanes spraying in lines over the area. The flowers she found[she is a wellknown herbalist ] she said were way too big for normal sizes. that s what happens when you use miracle grow!!!

  10. If farmers went back to growing “regular” seeds, they wouldn’t be able to grow as much. Perhaps then I wouldn’t have to burn ethanol in my vehicles.

  11. The ONLY way we can stop Monsanto is to stop supporting them. We need to make some hard decisions regarding priorities. Do we want to continue the slow suicide that eating Monsanto foods do to us? How about the exorbitant medical insurance rates we pay to undo (or hide) the damage caused by eating these foods? If people were shown exactly the TRUE cost of supporting Monsanto, they would be more inclined to buy Non-GMO and organic foods thereby taking this giant down. We need to embark on a teaching/learning campaign and help undo to brainwashing that has poisoned our world for the last 50 years.

  12. Just quit buying food made by them… corn, soy, canola, sugar beets, cotton seed oil, and animals that eat those foods. This will get rid of them faster than any legislation. Our legislators are hopeless.

    • I agree with you, but it’s very difficult for the average person to know what is a Monsanto product because they are ignoring the peoples demands to label GM foods. Why do you think they’re doing that? I propose we start a charity that helps people grow their own food. That would require someone with some capital to jump on the bandwagon. Any takers?

  13. eye opening information and answers to the worlds problems at www. thrivemovement.com ! this documentary is sold on amazon.com and needs to be spread to the sleeping masses !

  14. You go lawyers….Go get Monsanto to stop the killings and attempt at world take over !!!!!the most DISGUSTING thing about Monsanto is the fact that THEY are not a machine THEY are HUMAN BEINGS just like YOU and I ….and yet THEY are playing GOD to the rest if the world population!!!! IT MUST STOP

  15. If all else fails – through legal means – you are going to start seeing Monsanto executives assassinated by the desperate victims of their evil atrocities. Mark my words. The system can be corrupt and venal as it wants, but it will never stop desperate victims from seeking revenge.

This era will go down in history as sad sad failures of corporate assholes.
