“Mountain Man” Eustace Conway faces government shutdown 25

Eustace ConwayNo structures at Turtle Island Preserve, a 1,000-acre outdoor education center, came from an architect’s drawing board and few of their parts from Lowe’s. That’s become a problem for its nationally known founder, Eustace Conway, who doggedly lives in the old ways and teaches thousands a year how they can, too.

The problem is that, like Conway, his buildings don’t square with modern times. Erected without permits from lumber cut and milled on site, they don’t meet construction codes. Health authorities have cited violations. Watauga County has ordered Turtle Island to stop accepting visitors.  Continue Reading

  1. This is just ridiculous. “…don’t meet construction codes”? Really? Does it matter? It’s where he chooses to live. Why can’t these money hungry jerks just leave people the hell alone to live their lives? This isn’t about codes or safety. This is about money. Everything in this stupid Country is about money. He’s not filling enough pockets, THAT’s the real problem. So sick of this. So sick of living here. Living like this. “You can’t do this” “You have to pay to do this, pay to do that, pay pay pay, laws laws laws, taxes taxes taxes”. Enough already. Just leave the old guy alone to live in freaking peace for crying out loud. Sure would be nice if we actually had some adults running things around here. All these money hungry monsters are destroying lives on a daily basis. When will someone destroy theirs? Show them how it feels?

  2. So what if his buildings don’t square with modern times. Erected without permits from lumber cut and milled on site. Did they give money to the poor old man? or any Grant? Greedy Plastic Public Servants !! Poor Eustace……..

  4. I love what he stands for, I have the same goals. The difference is, I’m not asking permission! Since when did we need government permission to live? As Long as hes not using government provided resources ie. insurance, food stamps ect. what he does should be his business. Stop asking permission and live your life! Buy your land, grow your food and don’t ask, want or expect anyone to come to your rescue. Pay your damned taxes then tell them to kiss your ass!

  5. I believe that Eustace should be left alone to live as he chooses. I would address this to him directly, but I’m sure the man does not have electricity or use of the internet, by his own choosing.

  6. Why can’t he have his visitors sign a waiver? We all know that the real reason they want him to be ‘to code’ is to cover their asses so they can’t be sued (and to make money).

  7. idots…..poor Eustace. Yea, thousands of visitors come to his place a year. Eustace has rights but as soon as someone (like one of you) get hurt, the county gets sued because it didnt protect them. Sorry Eustace, comply with the law like the rest of us!

  8. anybody who don’t stand on his side, don’t go there and leave him the hell alone. ksmart, your a dick so go screw yourself.

  9. Eustace Conway is not actually running a “Nature Preserve”, although that description is designed to draw sympathy that his actual activities- “clear-logging the mountain for his firewood sales business”- would not.

This is also why Conway is having problems with building inspectors.. because he is not simply residing at a old family homestead, he is using the property as a business and accepting customers into that business-
AT THAT POINT you do have to meet modern codes for a BUSINESS.

If Conway was truly merely residing there as his personal property or harvesting resources for his family use, no one would care, and there are millions who live off of well water, wind power, cisterns, and have homes that pre-date building codes.

Once you turn that into a commercial enterprise, you no longer are a family homestead anymore.

ALSO- Watch the episodes where Conway brings a teen boy onto the property as free labor under the guise that Conway is “teaching him” the ways of the hills.. Conway is mean, insulting, belittling, and constantly threatening to kick the kid off “his lands”, so its sort of hard to not smile a little once Conway gets the same treatment.

Conway is not “protecting the mountain”, he is a parasite on it that chops down its lumber for rich people to use in their (decorative) fireplaces, and the mountain sustains and protects Conway.. not the other way around.

  10. What about the money you made from the show….where’s that …get a job an pay your bills like everyone else

  11. Leave the man and his family alone….he is one of the few of us who is leaving the SMALLEST CARBON footprint, the man is not stupid I am sure all of the buildings are safe!

  12. This is another intrusion by Big Brother: The officials of NC should
remember their past, as they fought for liberty and justice in the
war between the states. Freedom, Justice, and Rights… that’s
what this country stood for, many years ago. Let’s return to our
    Southern values.
